Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
Positive Step provides mobile occupational therapy services across Perth to support adults living with a spinal cord injury. We work alongside you to build practical skills, adapt your environment, and improve independence in everyday activities.
Living with a spinal cord injury can significantly impact how you move, complete daily tasks, and participate in work, home life, and the community. Our occupational therapists take a functional, real-world approach to rehabilitation, with therapy tailored to your goals, environment, and stage of recovery.
What is spinal cord injury rehabilitation?
Spinal cord injury rehabilitation focuses on developing the skills, strategies, and supports needed to navigate everyday life after injury. This may involve relearning tasks, adapting how activities are completed, and using equipment or environmental changes to support independence.
At Positive Step, therapy is delivered in your home and community so that strategies are practical, relevant, and sustainable.
How we support you
Goal-focused, person-centred therapy
Rehabilitation begins with understanding what matters most to you. Together, we set clear, achievable goals that may relate to personal care, home life, community access, work, or leisure. Therapy is structured to support steady, meaningful progress over time.
Functional rehabilitation in real-life settings
We provide therapy in your home and community to ensure skills are developed where you use them. Support may include:
- Personal care tasks such as dressing, grooming, and meal preparation
- Transfers and mobility strategies
- Home activities and routines
- Computer access and everyday technology use
- Community access and participation
Wheelchair, seating and pressure care
We provide assessment and guidance on wheelchair prescription, seating, positioning, and pressure care. This includes coordinating equipment trials and working with suppliers to ensure appropriate fit, safety, and long-term use.
Assistive technology
We support the selection and implementation of assistive technology to improve independence in daily life. This includes identifying suitable equipment, arranging trials, and ensuring it integrates effectively into your routines.
Home modifications
We assess your environment and recommend practical modifications to improve access, safety, and independence. Recommendations are tailored to your home and aligned with how you live and move through your space.
Returning to meaningful activities
We support you to re-engage in important life roles and activities, which may include:
- Driving and transport
- Employment or vocational goals
- Leisure and recreation
- Travel planning within Australia and overseas
