Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Rehabilitation
At Positive Step, we are passionate about supporting people who have experienced an acquired brain injury to rebuild independence and return to a meaningful and fulfilling life. Our focus is on helping you re-establish your daily routines, reconnect with valued activities, and achieve the highest level of independence possible.
A number of our occupational therapists have extensive experience in ABI rehabilitation and work alongside you to support recovery, adaptation and long-term functional outcomes.
Person-centred rehabilitation
Following a brain injury, changes may affect cognition, physical function, perception, sensation, and social participation. We work collaboratively with you to identify the areas that are most impacting your daily life and develop a clear understanding of your priorities.
Together, we set meaningful goals and realistic timeframes to guide your rehabilitation journey.
Functional, real-world therapy
Positive Step occupational therapists provide therapy in your home and community environment to ensure skills are developed in the context of everyday life. This may include support with:
- Personal care tasks such as feeding, dressing, and grooming
- Transfers and mobility
- Planning, organising, and managing daily routines
- Meal preparation and cooking
- Community access and transport training
- Returning to work, study, or valued activities
You remain at the centre of the process, choosing the activities that are most important to you.
We design tailored rehabilitation programs that reflect your goals, abilities, and support needs. These programs are regularly reviewed and adjusted to ensure meaningful progress. We also work closely with your family, carers, and support network to promote consistency, build confidence, and support successful outcomes.
Cognitive and functional retraining
Positive Step occupational therapists provide targeted ABI interventions, including:
- Cognitive retraining (attention, memory, planning, and problem-solving)
- Functional retraining of everyday activities
- Transfer training and mobility strategies
- Equipment training to support independence
- Community reintegration, including transport training
- Coordination of specialist services such as driver OT assessments or vehicle modifications
Our goal is to support you to regain skills, develop strategies, and rebuild confidence in daily life.
Assistive technology and equipment solutions
We are highly experienced in recommending and prescribing assistive technology to support independence following brain injury. This may include mobility aids, seating and pressure care equipment, commodes, and transfer solutions.
Where appropriate, we coordinate equipment trials to ensure any recommendation is safe, suitable, and effective before implementation.
Home modifications and environmental support
We also provide expertise in home modification and environmental adaptation. Our clinicians work with you to problem-solve practical changes to your home that improve safety, accessibility, and independence.
