Modified Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (mCIMT) is an evidence-based rehabilitation technique used with clients who have had a Stroke or other neurological conditions, to assist in the recovery of upper limb movement.
Diagnoses which may benefit most from mCIMT are:
Stroke
Traumatic Brain Injury
Spinal Cord Injury
Multiple Sclerosis
Cerebral Palsy (hemiparesis)
The therapy involves intensive training of the weaker arm while restricting the use of the stronger arm. Specifically, the use of the stronger arm is restricted using a mitten or another aid for much of each day. The idea is to encourage the person to use their weaker hand to do their daily activities.
The Occupational Therapist provides support throughout the two-week program on how to complete appropriate upper limb repetitive exercises and how best to use your affected arm in your activities of daily living to meet your goals.
mCIMT is a highly researched and highly credible treatment approach which has demonstrated improvement in upper limb function.
